For best results waxing in a row (every 2-4 weeks) for a couple of visits after your first appointment is a good idea. This will allow all the hair in different growth cycles to be removed from the root. After this period, you will be able to go longer in between appointments (every 4-6 weeks).
In preparation for waxing services at Solé Salon:
You need about 1/4 inch of hair in order to wax. You should be able to pinch the hair between your fingers. No more, no less.
Do not use chemical exfoliants such as Retin-A or other retinoids for about 3 weeks prior to waxing services. Retinoids thin the surface of the skin and leave it susceptible to lifting when waxed.
Accutane users must wait at least 6 months after finishing the prescription to have waxing services performed. Waxing can remove skin if done so, before this period.
It is safe to wax during pregnancy and menstruation, however, be prepared to feel increased sensitivity and irritation.
For those with a low pain tolerance, or with thick/dense hair, a pain reliever such as Advil or Tylenol (used as directed) may be taken 30 minutes prior to waxing to help reduce sensitivities.
Post Waxing Care:
Things to avoid post wax:
Outdoor sun exposure and indoor tanning beds for 24-48 hours
Hot baths (showering is fine), saunas and steam, and hot tubs
Moisturizers and lotions for 24 hours
Working out and sweating for 24-48 hours
Individuals may experience irritation and redness immediately after waxing. These symptoms should dissipate after 12-24 hours. In particular, leg and bikini waxing may have this affect. This is normal and an indication that the hair was removed from the root, which is why waxing lasts longer than shaving.
Breakouts can occur with waxing. This is because the hair has been removed from the follicle leaving the follicle open and susceptible to bacteria. These breakouts are not an indication that the service was unsanitary. It is up to the client to properly take care of the skin after waxing. Neosporin, tea tree oil, aloe vera, salicylic acid and witch hazel are all helpful remedies for breakouts after waxing.
Starting two days after a waxing service, to avoid ingrown hairs, keep the area exfoliated. Do not over exfoliate, but do use a gentle body scrub (Aveda's Beautifying Radiance Polish is a great recommendation) or salicylic cleanser such as Aveda's Outer Peace Foaming Cleanser. One final note: a loofah or mesh cloth can harbor bacteria causing breakouts so it is best not to use post waxing.
